Every activity that we do requires some planning. Unplanned activities have unplanned flow of activity steps and finally, the end result can be totally unplanned. Planning helps the efficiency every process and increases the chance of success.
Personal development requires planning routines as well. But before we start to plan, we need to acquire the global understanding of our personal development needs. We need to understand what we want to do and where we want to be. We need a vision of our self in order to prioritize and plan development activities.
What is the personal development vision statement? What it should represent? Why do you need the compass on your personal development journey?
The personal development vision is the place or state WHERE you want to be in mid to long term. The vision describe targeted position, image, status, financial welfare, health, skills or improvement of any other attribute that you want to achieve. The vision should be formulated in a SMART manner.
One of the tools during the process of vision setting is the S.M.A.R.T concept. This concept is acronym for terms that represent personal development objectives which need to be reached, in order to set vision that will bring result.
Specific – The development objective should be clearly defined.
Measurable – The result need to be measurable. Some results cannot be quantified easily, but than they should be measured by list of criteria achieved.
Achievable – The development goal need to be achievable and realistic. Setting unrealistic goals is not productive, since effort is in vain.
Relevant – Development objective need to be relevant to the real needs.
Time-framed – Development objective needs to have realistic time frame.
It is important to remember that objectives should neither be set too difficult nor too easy to be achieved. At same time development objectives should address expected achievements in desired field.
The vision should be referring the 1-3 years. It would be god to clearly define vision and to write it down. Reading a vision from time to time can be a good reminder that will bring us back on truck.
Also, it can be a motivator for things that need to be done. Therefore, the vision should be inspiring, motivating for the development activities, but also challenging.
The formulization of vision is only the beginning of the journey. But the vision is compass that guides the individual during that journey. As the time pass, the development goals can change. The vision will help you in achieving your goals.
