The Energy Drink became the phenomenon of the modern age. Contemporary life style, that brought a demanding chain of obligation and daily activities for most of the people, is draining the energy from every individual. The solution for demanding and long lasting day is – the Energy Drink. Is it really so?
Millions of energy drinks doses are being consumed every day. So, what is so wrong about in boosting the energy and alertness, especially since we are talking about products that are advertised as being prepared from herbs and natural ingredients? The energy drinks are containing a bunch of other ingredients that are not natural. Some of them may jeopardy your health in case of excessive intake.
Primary effect of energy drinks is energy and alertness increase. This is what the consumer is looking for. But secondary effects are accelerated heart beat, blood pressure increase, anxiety, headache and insomnia.
The US authorities started with keeping statistics related to energy drinks overdose. The record for three months shows the 677 overdose cases, causing seizures, hallucinations, chest pain, headache and sleep distortion.
Two main ingredients of energy drinks are sugar and caffeine. These ingredients are stimulating for a short period, but on the longer period are causing energy exhaustion, caused by fatigue of adrenal glands.
The rate of diabetes, caused by excessive intake of refined sugar, reached epidemic proportions in US. Diet that is saturated with sugar can overload pancreas, The pancreas is the organ that is in charge for production of insulin hormone that regulates the sugar level in the blood. Diabetes can occur in case of pancreas is “worn out”.
Some energy drinks contain up to 7 times more caffeine than a cup of coffee. The large doses of caffeine can overload the nerve system, increase the blood pressure and accelerate the heartbeat. Caffeine is causing the addiction as well.
In some cases the artificial sweeteners are being used, instead of sugar. Aspartame is one of the most frequently used sweeteners. The human body react to artificial sweeteners as it treat toxins.
Other potential ingredients are:
Sodium Benzoate – the most common preservative seems to damage the body cells and is increasing the presence of free radicals. Sodium benzoate in combination with ascorbic acid can produce carcinogen benzene.
Phenylalanine – although being the essential amino acid, it is also the neuro toxin. In case of overdose it can cause overload brain cells to the point of cellular death.
Guarana – is extracted from Guarana plant. It contains 3-4 times more caffeine than coffee grains.
Obviously, the energy drinks need to be consumed with precaution. Occasional drinking of these beverages will not harm you. But daily and excessive consumption will ruin your health and probably create the addiction. Try to use it only when you need it, instead to consume it daily. Instead, choose healthy nutrition, avoid toxins and stress and try to sleep well.
