The noise can make us very nervous. It can distract us from what we are doing. The noise can reduce your outputs or even make you think about nothing else than the noise itself. Still, inconvenience of the noisy atmosphere is nothing compared to the health hazards. The loss of hearing and tinnitus ( buzz in the ears ) are becoming illnesses of the modern age. The noise of 85 db can cause hearing damage, especially if you are exposed for the longer period of time.
Perception of noise is quite individual thing. Somebody can be distracted by the noise of the leaking water tap, while other can sleep next to the railway. There are circumstances when we cannot control the noise around us. Still, we can increase awareness of noise hazards and adjust / avoid / minimize exposure to the high level and long duration of the noise.
In order to be ready to cope with the noise, it is good to know the main sources of the noise and the danger to health they bring.
Highway – the noise level is usually between 75 db and 85 db. The hearing is jeopardy only after couple of hours spent next to the highway.
Airport – Airplane take off is generating the noise between 110 db and 150 db. Permanent hearing damage can occur even after only several minutes of exposure.
Railroad – Train generate the noise that exceeds the 100 db.
Road Construction Works - Hydraulic hammers is probably the loudest machine at the road construction sites. The noise generated is above 120 db. The operator must wear the protection, so if you are passing by it is better to bypass it.
Construction sites - Even without hydraulic hammer they are exceeding 100 db.
Discotheques – The youth is often ignoring the noise of the night life. The noise in the discotheque is reaching the 105 db. Spending more than one hour can lead to hearing damage. The concerts can be even louder, especially if near to speakers.
Headphones – Although they do not look dangerous from perspective of noise generation, headphones can be dangerous. If you are listening the music with use of headphones, bear in mind that loud music can damage your hearing. Even if you like some particular song to be played loud, reduce the volume after is finished.
