Pranayama: Breath of Life
Posted: Jul 2008
The
breathing rhythm is following us
through our whole life, from our
birth to our death. We can
influence our emotional
condition, physiologic
processes, concentration and
energy flows in our body, first
by observing our breathing and
then by learning to control it.
The breathing control exercises
– the Pranayama – are
creating connection between
mind, physical and subtle body.
| The
Pranayama is the basic of Yoga
exercises. It can be even
practiced individually,
outside of Yoga exercise.
Overall, Pranayama – the
breathing control – can
help us to achieve the
greater control over our
emotions, physiological
processes and increase our
physical performance. The
breathing techniques can
help us to be more focus
on our work, it can help
us to suppress unrest
before exam or it can
improve our performance in
sport. Proper breathing
techniques makes the same influence
to your life as the steel
in the reinforced
concrete. Steel gives
strength to concrete.
Without it concrete is
maybe strong for forces in
one direction, but is
fragile as is being
exposed to forces from
other direction. |
Pranayama
is a Sanskrit
word meaning
"lengthening of
the prana or
breath". The
word is composed of
two Sanskrit words,
Prāna, life
force, or vital
energy,
particularly, the
breath, and "āyāma",
to lengthen or
extend. It is often
translated as
control of the life
force (prana).
When used as a
technical term in yoga,
it is often
translated more
specifically as
"breath control
".

Whether
you have intention to practice
yoga or not, learning Pranayama,
along with Meditation techniques,
can boost your energy, vitality,
focus and control over
situations in your life, by
using your breath of life. Before
coming to specific breathing
techniques, it is good to look
how it works now. Even a first
intention to observe your breath
is a start of exercising
breathing techniques.
Average
individual who is not exercising
breathing techniques, especially
if he is not having any physical
activities, is breathing rather shallow.
This means that he/she is using
only 30% of lungs capacity. As a
result, body is forced to
operate with low oxygen intake.
This is leading to overall poor
performance of physical and
intellectual activities. On the
other hand, shallow breathing is
leaving lungs without proper
ventilation, which cerate
perfect environment for
development of bacteria. Also, shallow
breathing is reducing de-toxication rate of the
organism, since part of toxins
of our body are being extracted
through breathing. In such shape
our body is less resistant to illness.
|
The
breathing phenomenon,
breath of life, is
very interesting from the physiological
point; from one side
breathing is subconscious
and automatic activity,
but from the other it is
activity that can be fully
controlled by our conscious
will.
Pranayama
Breathing
techniques will learn us
to control our breath,
blood pressure, heart
rate. It will also help us
to control our mind and
relief it from negative thoughts.
It will help us to control
our breath of life. |
