Brain Waves

Brain Wave States                  Posted: Sep 2009

What are the main brain wave states. Why is the alpha brainwave state interesting for personal development?

The human brain, fabulous computer, is made of millions of brain cells. Every cell holds the electric current. Many researches are done in the area of human brain. It seems that many things are still to be discovered. Still, what we learned by now is giving us the relation between electrical activities in the brain and brain function. Since the activities of the brain are showing electrical impulses. The electrical activity of the brain cells is creating the brainwaves. The research of the electrical activities and brain waves is done with the use of electroencephalograph ( EEG ). The brain waves are grouped in four main groups: alpha, beta, theta and delta. Frequency of waves caused by electrical activity is measured in Hertz ( Hz ).

  • Delta brain waves slowest range of frequencies. They oscillate between 0 and 4 Hz. Delta waves are occurring during the deepest sleep. Delta state is present during coma state or during the anesthesia.

  • Theta brain waves ere related to dreams, deep relaxation and daydreaming. The frequency of theta brain waves is between 4 and 8 Hz.

  • Alpha brain waves are associated to brain state during practicing a different mental disciplines. The meditation precisionists were tested with EEG equipment and it was shown that their brains are tuned to alpha state. Also the meditation precisionists can shift to theta brain state. The alpha brain state is taking the range between 8 and 14 Hz.

  • Beta brain waves are associated to wakefulness, reasoning, analytical activity, problem solving, etc. All emotional states like stress, joy, pain, fear or jealousy are occurring when the brain in the beta state. Beta brainwaves are taking the range above 14 Hz.

Now we see that state of mind greatly depends of brain wave activity. Electrical activity of the brain is shaping the state of mind. Without having a brain tuned to the right frequency it is impossible to achieve desired mental activity. If you want to meditate, you need to have lower your brain wave frequency from wake beta state to alpha. If you do not lower your brain frequency you will not be able to meditate, since your brain will be to loud. If you lower the brain state frequency too much you will fall asleep. On the other side, if you are driving you need to stay awake. But if you are tired than your brain is shutting down gradually. You need to wake it up with coffee and stretching legs, or even to park and take the nap in order to rest your brain.

Basically, tuning the brain to the right frequency is not easy, since it is not directly under the influence of the conscious will. Brain wave state depends of many things, like activity cycles, sleeping habits, nutrition, etc. On the other hand the tuning of the brain is possible through training. One of effective aids for tuning the frequency of brainwaves to desired frequency are binaural beats programs that entrain your brain with specially designed audio programs.

For sure, the alpha brain wave state is the most interesting to be trained. Meditation, hypnosis or learning are the processes where you are in the brainwave state. The alpha state is also difficult to stay in since you are on the thin edge of falling to sleep or awaking. Maybe the next step of your personal introspective and development can be training to tune into alpha brain wave state.

Soon: Entering the Alpha Brainwave State
